Message from the Chair

As the new Chairman for the 2008 Games I am delighted to welcome everyone to Bute Highland Games. I have served on the Committee for over 20 years and it is a great honour to be the Chairman for this year and next.

Bute Highland Games is a family event and I am pleased that my grandson will be able to enjoy his first Highland Games. I do not want to tempt Fate but it couldn’t possibly be any wetter than last year when all the careful preparations of the Committee were literally washed out by the torrential rain. I think all those who competed deserved a medal for taking part !

As usual there is something to interest everyone – Highland Dancing, Junior Shinty, Wrestling, Athletics, the Road Race, Heavy Events, and of course Pipe Bands and Caber Tossing.

There will also be a range of stalls with local organisations and commercial firms selling their wares and a wide range of refreshment and catering will be available on the park. We also welcome Waverley passengers during the afternoon and for those who have become Patrons of the Games the facilities of the Patrons’ Tent where they can meet friends old and new from all over the world as well as Bute!

Bute Highland Games Diamond Jubilee in 2007 should have been a “sparkling” occasion but the unpredictable Scottish weather ensured that it was a “washout”.  However despite the weather the organising committee decided to carry on.  As a gesture of goodwill to mark the occasion of our Diamond Jubilee we were honoured with hosting the Glasgow and West of Scotland Pipe Band Championships.  We were also awarded the Scottish Heavyweight  Championships by the Scottish Athletics Federation which attracted 13 competitors.

The loss of the colourful spectacle of the highland dancers in their national costume was taken away as the highland dancing competition, which includes the Bute Championship, was held within the Pavilion.

Capped with nearly another record entry of highland dancers the day was well geared up for a day to remember – and remembered it was – for all the wrong reasons.

However this has not deterred the organising committee from pressing forward and arranging this year’s games which are approaching fast.   We have an excellent entry in the pipe band competition and also an excellent entry for the highland dancing competition for which we thank the RSPBA (Glasgow and West of Scotland Branch) and George Mitchelson respectively. Any highland dancer not yet entered should contact gmitchelson@blueyonder.co.uk

Passengers, sailing on PS Waverley on Games Day, wishing to attend the Games can pick up the appropriate voucher from the Waverley Terminal or the ship’s purser on the day.  This will allow passengers half price admission.  If you do not have a voucher full price admission must be paid.

We hope, for everyone’s benefit, that the sun will shine and, this time, it will be a day to remember for all the right reasons.
